"Faith in the Unseen: The Art of Interior Transformation"
The author of Hebrews defines faith as "assurance about what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1). Similarly, 2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us that we "live by faith, not by sight". This wisdom made me ponder how closely the gift of creative design mirrors these principles of faith. As designers, we ask our clients to place their trust in our creativity, investing in a vision they haven’t yet seen. It's fundamentally about trust – do you believe in your designer enough to take that leap of faith?
Take my own office as an example. It began as a small, dimly-lit bedroom with a conventional entrance off the hallway. On the left, a 6’ wide, 2’ deep closet, and across from me, a large picture window. At first glance, it offered limited options for creativity. Yet, I saw potential where others might have seen constraints.
I transformed the space by painting it white, removing the closet to create a 4’ entry into the living room, flanked by built-in bookcases. This not only made the room feel larger but also shifted its entire dynamic. I sealed the original entry, introduced a door to the adjacent bathroom a little further down that wall, and utilized the end-of-hallway space that is no longer needed to construct a new storage closet. The result? My office now doubles as a guest room with a full-size sofa bed and private bath, enhancing our home’s living space with its open design and direct access to the living room.
This transformation underscores a truth about interior design: the end result is often beyond what you can initially envision. It’s a journey through the "Design Concept" phase, requiring an investment in both faith and finances for the expertise and skills we bring. In my case, I attribute my inspiration to a higher source – the Holy Spirit guides my creativity, a gift I fully embraced after being called to design school in 2005, a time when I doubted my own creative capabilities.
This process begs the question: What are you seeking in your space? If you're looking for more than a conventional solution – if you're ready to invest in an inspired design born from a partnership built on trust, then consider whether you're prepared for that leap of faith. Do you desire an environment that transcends the ordinary, created with skill and divinely inspired creativity?
